The problem with locating goats in the hills
Goats are the extreme case of extensive livestock farming: animals that climb, slip into scrubland where you can't see them ten metres away and make use of land no other livestock wants. That, their great strength, is also the problem: finding them.
In ravines and on shady slopes, mobile coverage simply doesn't exist, so SIM-based collars are no good there. And putting up your own antennas in that terrain is expensive and short-range. Satellite communication doesn't depend on any of that.
How goat farmers use it
- Collars on the lead animals of the herd: just like with sheep, collars on the goats that lead the group let you keep track of all of them without a collar on every animal.
- Grazing in scrubland and wildfire prevention: the route history shows you which areas the herd has cleared and which it hasn't, something increasingly valued in preventive grazing contracts.
- Ravines and crags: when a goat or a group strays into an inaccessible spot, you know the exact point before you set off, and you take the right path.
- Guard dog mode: automatic alert if they leave the marked area — handy on farms bordering crops, which with goats is a classic.

Frequently asked questions
Does it work in ravines and shady north-facing slopes?
Yes. The collar needs open sky to communicate with the satellite; at the bottom of a very narrow gorge the position may take a little longer to come through, but as soon as the animal moves into a clear area it sends it. In practice, in real grazing conditions, you have the herd located.
Won't the goats wreck the collar?
It's designed for the rough life of goats: a casing that withstands knocks, mud and sun, and a strap sized for the animal. We've been making and field-testing trackers since 2011.
How many collars do I need?
Same as with sheep: collars on the lead animals of each group that moves together. For most herds, between 2 and 4 collars. Tell us about your situation on WhatsApp and we'll fine-tune it for you.
