The problem of locating free-range cows
Anyone with free-range cows knows it: the time goes on searching. Driving up to the pass to check they're all there. Going round the farm because one is missing. And the times when it really matters —a cow that wanders off to calve, a lameness, an animal that slips into the neighbour's land— you find out too late.
Cheap GPS collars work over the mobile phone network, and coverage on mountain passes, in closed valleys and on large wood pastures is what it is: none, or on and off. Other systems force you to install an antenna on the farm, with the cost and limited range that comes with it. This collar depends on none of that: it talks directly to the satellite.
How cattle farmers use it
- Keeping track of groups on the pass: you open the app in the morning and see where each group is without starting the 4x4. You save diesel and whole days of work.
- Calving in the hills: a cow that separates from the group and stops moving is a sign. You get to the calving in time, not three days later.

Can the collar withstand life on a cow out in the hills?
Yes. It's designed for rain, mud, knocks, sun and cold, with a strap adapted to a cow's neck. We've been making trackers since 2011 and testing them in real field conditions.

Yes, that's exactly what it's for. It uses no SIM or antennas: it sends the position via satellite. The only condition is open sky, which is where free-range cows live.
